Strictly Tango Practice

UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE THIS ACTIVITY HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
Every last Friday of the month.
6:00-7:30pm at the Reach Center.
2520 Harris street.
The Buenos Aires group practicing.

Strictly  Tango Practice  (STP)

Organized by Marisela & George

STP

is a space created to:

- give and receive feedback with a friend in a polite, acceptable environment.

- practice your tango in an atmosphere of respect and support.

- experiment. Share figures, tips, mechanics, likes and dislike, preferences etc.

- stop, talk, and  look at yourself and your partner in the mirror.

- bring and share video with your partner.
Be with the same partner the entire time if you choose to.

What this Practice will not be:

A place to dance complete tandas.

We will not have Cortina. You don't have to wait to be invited to practice or dance.

Dress Code: socks, bare foot, high heel, short heal, shorts, long pants, tuxedo. You decide.

Tandas: 3 songs per person, if you wish to negotiate more that is up to you.

Cabeceo: None, verbal invitation acceptable.

Attendance: With or without partner, but you may want to be proactive and invite

classmates or acquaintances.

Open & Close: choose whatever embrace works for you, but maintain an atmosphere of respect.

Music: Classic tango. It will be audible enough that you can practice the movement to the music, but not so loud that you cannot hear each other.

What to practice: Maybe you just want to hear how the other person feels about your dance or practice what you did in class. Perhaps practice walking together to the music. Do it for half a song and ask for feedback. Remember this is a practice, you don’t have to rush.

SUGGESTIONS

Open the dialogue by saying: I want feedback, or I want to practice the figure we did in class, or I want to show you something I learned somewhere… etc.

Consider this approach when giving feedback

“This work for me, do you want to try…”

I feel … maybe if you slow down I can understand better… Etc.

Want to share your experience for that evening?

We will have a box where you can leave anonymous comments with your likes and dislikes about your personal experience that particular evening. I may publish them in the e.tango list or just read them at the practice, maybe one or two per week.

At the Reach Center $5.

Tips from Marisela' s book of teaching tango

1. With good posture: The torso moves the body. The hands receive energy from the torso. Leaving all your leading energy in your arms will pull or push your follower. When you are in control of your posture, you will be able to read your partner with ease.

2. A dancer who can do close embrace first can move easily into open. You must be able to dance close if you are dancing Argentine tango as a social or exhibition dance.

3. Respecting the timing of each other is part of developing a  sense of the readiness of your partner. Be present in the moment. Only then, can you feel the “right moment” to move. Impatience causes the lead to push and pull and the follower to anticipate.

Dancing improvised tango at our Wedding. George and I

For those of you who enjoy dancing with George. He has been dancing for less than a year at our wedding in 2008. Nice going, sweetie!

Random inspirational quotes

Life's battle don't always go to the stronger or faster man(woman) but sooner or later the one that   wins is the one who thinks he, she can.

"Success" come before "work" only in the dictionary.

You never know what you can do until you try. Try dancing if you think you can't!
